Founded on a warm summer day on August 23, 2016, in the welcoming home of Mr. Leon in Omaha, Nebraska, the Nebraska Igbo Union embarked on a mission to unite, celebrate, and promote the rich Igbo culture in the heart of the United States. The inaugural meeting was marked by the presence of visionary leaders including Mr. Felix Uzoechi (Oda Opuo), Mr. Victor Nwaya, Mr. Okechukwu Okafor (Okey Malay), Mr. Ikechukwu Udukwu, Mr. Ekene Ojukwu (Igiligi na Alor), and Mr. Ifeanyi Ani, each bringing a unique passion and commitment to the cause.
Under the dedicated leadership of Mr. Felix Uzoechi (Oda Opuo), who served as the first president from 2016 to 2020, the union laid down its roots, establishing a foundation of community, culture, and connection. The baton was then passed to Mr. Victor Nwaya, who led from 2020 to 2023, furthering the mission and expanding the reach of the union. Currently, the community is guided by the wisdom and leadership of Mr. Ifeanyi Egbuna (Aka ekpuchi onwa), who continues to steer us toward greater heights.
In 2023, a significant milestone was achieved with the transition of our name to the Nebraska Igbo Community. This change was not merely in nomenclature but in vision and scope, broadening our embrace to include all Igbo people and those in Nebraska who identify with or wish to learn about Igbo culture, cosmology, spiritualism, and epistemology. This evolution reflects our commitment to inclusivity and the sharing of our rich heritage with a wider audience.
Since our inception, the Nebraska Igbo Community has grown exponentially, now encompassing approximately 24 families along with their spouses and children. Our growth is a testament to the vibrancy and allure of Igbo culture, and the welcoming spirit of our community.
We have been at the forefront of organizing cultural events and programs that not only celebrate our heritage but also aim at human emancipation and societal advancement. Our activities span across Nebraska and Nigeria, showcasing the global impact of our collective efforts. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we mobilized to make significant donations to women’s societies in Nigeria, demonstrating our commitment to giving back and uplifting those in need.
Moreover, our involvement in local community programs in Nebraska, such as highway cleaning exercises, donation drives, and offering scholarships to minority students, underscores our dedication to societal contribution and integration. These initiatives reflect our Igbo ethos of Ọdinma anị—a principle of complete respect for human dignity, community support, and collective responsibility.
The Nebraska Igbo Community stands as a beacon of cultural pride, educational advocacy, and communal support. We are more than just a group; we are a family united by shared heritage, mutual respect, and the enduring spirit of Ụmụnna. As we continue on our journey, we remain committed to preserving our traditions, educating future generations, and making positive contributions both locally and globally.
